The opinion of Kent Brooks that people in South Lakeland can’t make any meaningful difference to global climate (Letters, July 19, 'Root of issue'), is an opinion shared by some when talking about reducing our reliance on single-use plastic.

Do not underestimate the power of the individual multiplied.

Multi-nationals, if they wish to stay in business, respond to consumer power. Ruling bodies and governments, if they wish to stay in power, respond to protests and petitions.

If we all stop buying products containing palm oil, the lack of demand will impact the supply, thereby reducing deforestation.

Turning off a light when leaving a room or switching to a reusable cup when buying your latte-to-go may seem paltry in light of environmental issues on a global scale.

But isn’t it better to tell our children and grandchildren that we tried, rather than we thought it was beyond hope so we watched the planet go to the dogs?
