50 YEARS AGO - 1968
Hundreds of railway enthusiasts from many parts of the north of England - and from Scotland - went to Aisgill, north Westmorland, on Sunday afternoon to welcome the last steam train to run on British Railways.
The 11-coach train was carrying 450 passengers who had each paid 15 guineas for the trip from Liverpool Lime Street with the train passing through Dent, Garsdale and Kirkby Stephen to Carlisle, before returning to Liverpool.
25 YEARS AGO - 1993
After dithering for a year, the Home Office has announced that a public inquiry will be held into the contentious issue of a 10mph speed limit for Windermere.
With 1,500 formal objections, Lake District National Park officer John Toothill forecasted it could last as long as two months
