BOLTON-le-Sands Horticultural Society celebrated its 90th annual summer show with bumper entries of fruit and vegetables, despite the summer's long drought.

Flowers were fewer in number but the village community centre was still filled with the heady fragrance of roses, sweet peas and lilies, making a "magnificent display of colour".

The hall also hosted a collection of archive pictures and memorabilia about the society and its members and contributors over the past nine decades.

Opening the show was village lengthsman Mike Ashton, a courier for North West Blood Bikes, which was chosen by the society as its charity of the year.

Horticultural society chair Ian Hutton paid tribute to the hard work of volunteers, committee members and helpers, including those who staffed the kitchen, serving tea and cakes in the afternoon.

An auction conducted by parish council vice-chairman Mike Craddock raised almost £71, half of which will be given to North West Blood Bikes.
