KENT Valley Road Club cyclists celebrated their club’s 90th anniversary year on Sunday with a 90-kilometre club run from Kendal Rugby Club.

Formed in 1928 at a meeting beside Milnthorpe Road, Kendal, on what was then known as Orphan’s House Hill, the founder members were Norman Hutton, James Proctor, Victor Taylor, Edward Noble and Jack Greenbank.

In those earliest days riders wore black tights and jackets but some years later KVRC adopted a three-banded jersey to display Kendal’s colours, and many of Sunday’s riders wore specially-commissioned anniversary jerseys in that green, white and red design

The club still promotes a weekly Sunday club run (9am from Kendal Leisure Centre) plus two annual road races on the Old Hutton circuit and regular time trials. Longer audax-style rides plus involvement in a winter Lanequest series also maintain the adventurous spirit of the club’s early pioneers.

The club hopes to gather as many former members and friends as possible to enjoy its 90th anniversary awards night dinner at Kendal Rugby Club in early November.
