AMBLESIDE Girl Guides have celebrated their 100th birthday.
One hundred specially-baked anniversary cup cakes, each with a candle in the middle, marked the anniversary at Ambleside Parish Centre.
Examples on display of navy blue serge uniforms from 1918 onwards contrasted with the comfortable, practical and distinctive red and blue outfits worn by Guides today.
Former Guides enjoyed an opportunity to share memories, especially of the fun they had at camp, with porridge for 40 prepared over an open fire and meals cooked to perfection in hay boxes, as well as the routine Friday night ‘sock inspection.’
To celebrate the spirit of Guiding today, guests were invited to join in a centenary activity of 100 numbered challenges, completing as many as they can before March 2019. One involves learning the eight points of the compass, identifying 35 different flowers and even living without a mobile phone for 72 hours.
