A CALL has gone out to Furness fell enthusiasts to help rescue some of the best-loved high routes in the Lake District.
Lake District National Park Authority volunteer co-ordinator Tim Duckmanton said he was keen to hear from anyone with time on their hands, good practical skills and navigation knowledge to help tackle path erosion, caused by 20 million feet a year and high levels of rainfall.

"Experience isn't essential, because we will be giving full and diverse training, from repair techniques to first aid, and working with the public. We want fit people but Herculean strength is not needed! A lot of the work involves minor but crucially important maintenance work, such as clearing drainage ditches."
Mr Duckmanton said with crucial repairs needed on routes around Coniston Old Man, Low Water, Goats Water and Wetherlam, he hoped Furness people would answer the rallying call.
Fix the Fells is backed by the LDNPA, National Trust and Natural England and supported financially by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Tourism and Conservation Partnership, Friends of the Lake District, Ramblers Association and members of the public.
