KENDAL'S ASDA superstore will close to customers this weekend to enable a major refurbishment to take place, reports Ellie Hargreaves.

The Burton Road supermarket, which sees thousands of shoppers cross its threshold each day, will shut from 8pm tomorrow (Saturday) until 8am on Tuesday.

For the past fortnight the shop has closed during the night, between 10pm and 8am, while a new layout is installed and its aisles are widened.

A spokesman for the chain said much of the store's re-design, which was aimed at "improving the shopping experience", would be completed by Tuesday. However, ASDA would not return to 24 hour opening until Monday, May 19.

Duty manager Pat Johnston said the store had seen an increase in customers this week but said the weather, rather than the planned closure, was likely to be the reason.

"It often happens during a hot spell - sales in certain areas reach their peak," she said. "Ultimately the store is going to look great. It will be an easier shopping experience for the customers with more space and a nice, fresh, bright store."

While ASDA will still operate its out-of-hours pharmacy service, shoppers may notice problems at the fuel pumps today.

Ms Johnston said the supermarket's self-service petrol station had been closed due to technical problems unrelated to the store's refurbishment, but it was expected to be up and running again tomorrow (Saturday).
