A SQUARE kilometre of grassland has been left scorched by a large fire that broke out in South Lakeland yesterday.
Four fire engines and a Land Rover battled for more than three hours to bring the blaze, on a steep fellside to the east of Coniston, under control.
Fire fighters from Coniston, Ambleside, Windermere and Broughton-in-Furness used hoses and beaters to extinguish the blaze, which had taken hold in grass and gorse at 9.45pm.
No one was injured by the fire.
