Crowds honour South Lakeland legend

HUNDREDS of people have gathered on a South Lakeland green to honour a 12th Century legend.

The festival of Doodleshire is taking place on Gooseholme, in Kendal, this afternnon.

The event pays homage to Dickie Doodle, who, legend has it, during the 12th Century established the county of Doodleshire on the banks of the River Kent after a drinking binge saw his expulsion from Kendal.

The festival was opened by the newly elected mayor of Doodleshire, Gwen Murfin, the outgoing mayor of Kendal.

Visitors to the event are being entertained by the Kendal Concert Band, the On a Roll Drummers and the Kendal Fiddlers.

Other activities include a children's fancy dress parade and a tug-o-war contest.
