Police warn about batch of contaminated heroin

Cumbria Police today warned drug users about a batch of contaminated heroin being sold in the UK.

Forces across the country have received reports that a number of people have been admitted to hospital after injecting a heroin based substance. At least one individual was admitted to intensive care.

The effects are described as immediate loss of physical function and instant memory loss which may last for some days. The normal medical drugs to counteract the effects of an overdose do not appear to be working. There is therefore a high risk of overdose or death.

In the event of a suspected overdose or adverse effect then urgent admission to hospital is required.

Detective Inspector Mark Backhouse said: "This illustrates the dangers associated with the misuse of drugs and I would strongly recommend that people stop using heroin and other drugs, as they are putting themselves in extreme danger. Anyone with information about the illegal use of drugs should contact the Police immediately on 0845 33 00 247, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
