Football - County boss stands down....

12:53pm Sunday 18th May 2008

KENDAL County boss Dave Chambers has decided to relinquish the manager's job after five consecutive seasons in the hot seat, but said it was not "a footballing decision".

"Congratulations to Ambleside for winning the title, but I feel proud of what our boys achieved this season given the circumstances," he said.

"Some people at the start of the season after hearing about the players that chose to leave considered that we would be a team of also-rans.

"Instead we've been in three finals and finished runners-up in the league and while it would have been nice to have won a trophy, we've still done tremedously well given our personnel and financial resources.

"We've been operating with a squad of basically 16 players this season and our good cup runs have meant we've played more matches than anyone else.

" Every game in the last six weeks has been a cup final for us and I think we eventually just ran out of steam.

"Although I personally feel mentally and physically drained, I must admit this has probably been the most enjoyable season in charge.

"I d like to thank County for giving me the opportunity to be the manager and wish the club all the best for the future.
