A PRIMARY school in the Upper Eden Valleyis the latest site for a new stone sculpture.
Renowned artistAndy Goldsworthy said that he was "taking inspiration from the educationalenvironment" when he started his sculpture at Brough Primary School,Church Brough, near Kirkby Stephen.
The Cone design, inspiredby the Nine Standard cairns on nearby Hartley Fell, is contained within anew pinfold (old name for a sheepfold), and the stone for the project hasbeen donated by two local farming families.
The originalpinfold in Church Brough was knocked down and the land built upon severalyears ago, but as the school was so near it was felt appropriate to sitethe new pinfold and sculpture in the school grounds.
Pupilsand teachers from Brough Primary School will be using the cone shape in anumber of areas including art, design and maths while the sculpture isbeing built.
Art coordinator Lynne Wade told the Gazette: "Thewhole school has studied Andy Goldsworthy's sculptures and designed someof their own work using the same natural materials."
The conesculpture at Brough school is the third cone planned for pinfolds in ninevillages around the Kirkby Stephen area.
