SUNDAY'S trials at Coniston Tops were well supported and in the six-strong puppy trail Stan Heywood and Reg Smith's Another Go emerged victorious, writes Lynn Pawley.
The Kendal-based bitch was bred out of Liam's Lady by Crackerjack and it ran on well to hold off the challenge from Sandy Bay (Tanist True Colours) by a couple of lengths.
Bill and Tina Mellon and Leanne Simpson's Cracking Sunlight was not too far adrift in third and the winner clocked 4min 48sec.
A slightly longer trail was contested by 32 seniors and Windermere-based hounds dominated proceedings.
Peter Green and Kevin Coulter's Super Duke put in a solid driving display to repeat its victory of the previous week. The five-year-old beat Ken Cole's Sonny Boy by three lengths. The winner's kennel mate, Superclub, owned by Jane Peat, was third and the time was 9.09.
Open trials were also held at The Mast, Kendal at the weekend.
On Saturday, Lynn Brown and Joan Hutchinson's Barrow-based pair Tiger Bay and Sandy Bay recorded a kennel 1-2.
Tiger Bay showed on the finish with the lead and ran on strongly to deny its younger counterpart by ten yards.
Donna Bingham's two-year-old Dancing Miracle was third of the 17 runners and the time was 6.33.
Twenty-four hours later, Jean Metcalfe, Alison Sweeney and Katherine Lyon's Ashmore prevailed in a close finish. The Lindale four-year-old got the verdict over Joe and Vanessa Simpson's Saucy Sal and its litter brother Whitmore, owned by Metcalfe in partnership with Donald McClean. There were 11 runners and the time was 6.27.
The HTA's 31st annual meeting will be held at the Hundith Hill Hotel, Lorton on Sunday, February 3 at 2pm.
Honorary membership will be bestowed upon George Birkett and John Jenkinson and the championship trophies will also be presented.
Three notices of motion have been put forward for consideration and the topic of the number of junior trails in 2003 will also be discussed.The Carlisle and Penrith area will be well represented by 16 puppies during 2003.
Of these, half were bred by Hazel Gray of Unthank out of My Fair Lady and sired by Aces High. Gray has retained a bitch named Phoenix and a dog to be called Hurry Up Harry.
The Airey family of Carlisle will be slipping two bitch puppies from this strain and they continue their familiar prefix. Meadow Brook and Meadow Rose.
Fellow townie' Margaret Hugo has taken charge of two dogs, High Command and High Commission. The latter co-owned by her niece Chantel Hope.
John and James Horn of Lazonby have also chosen two dog puppies and they will race as Ace of Clubs and Ace Of Spades.
Penrith's Bob Johnstone reared a litter by Morse out of his 2002 veteran champion Eden Ruby and he has retained a bitch named Eden Rook.
A litter sister, Spirit, has gone to Malcolm Holmes of Ellonby who has made a welcome return to the sport.
New members, William and Nathan Collin of Appleby will be looking forward to their first season as owners with Halley Toesis a bitch puppy from the pairing of Ludo with Madam Aries.
Two members of the H & H Irish Eyes litter have remained in the area, Brave Pilot with the HTA's most easterly member, Margaret Wintrip, of Morpeth, and Baros which Richard and Carole Dickinson. of Hesket Newmarket, have named after the Liverpool FC hero.
Bill and Tina Mellon and Leanne Simpson have added Cracking Sunlight to their Appleby kennels. The bitch puppy is a product of the Carling All That Jazz pairing.
Stephen Hornby of Stranraer has acquired Tartan Lass a bitch hound bred by Master Milan out of the record breaking Lady Bandress.
Completing the inventory is a non-produce bitch hound owned by Carole Harrison of Fingland. Judge Judy was bred in the Border Association by Ocean Can out of Ocean Lady.
