CONTROVERSIAL plans for a key stretch of Kendal’s £400,000 new flagship leisure route have been given the green light.
At a call-in meeting, members of Cumbria County Council’s local committee for South Lakeland approved the building of the Kendal Riverside Route - from Kirkland in the south of the town to Dockray in the north - on public land on New Road.
The New Road section of the path, which will be designed for use by cyclists and pedestrians, will be located at the Kent riverside of the land, rather than by the road – which had been another option.
Councillors also discussed the removal of one of the two southbound lanes of New Road in order to preserve the amount of land that can be used for car parking. However, this was rejected, meaning the plans will lead to the loss of 40 free car parking spaces.
