ADULTS who buy alcohol for underage drinkers are facing a police crackdown.

Officers in South Cumbria are targeting the proxy buying of drinks for young people, which is illegal.

They warn offenders can expect a fixed penalty notice or even a criminal conviction.

Police Community Support Officer Cathy Hayes said: ''Tackling proxy purchasing is essential if we are to stop alcohol getting into the hands of children. Those who buy alcohol on behalf of under-18s need to know that they are committing a serious offence that has consequences for the entire community.”

South Cumbria Police is working in partnership with local authorities and licensed premises to combat these sales to increase child safety and tackle the problem of youths drinking in public areas and the resulting anti-social behaviour.
