ORGANISERS of the Great North Swim have compiled expert diet and training advice to help anyone limbering up for the journey across Windermere.
2,200 people will take to the water on September 13 for a one-mile swim across England’s largest lake.
Event director and former swimmer, Colin Hill, said: “A decent amount of training and a healthy balanced diet will significantly improve your performance on the day.
“Hitting the pool around three times a week will ensure you are ready for the big day and you must be able to swim a mile in training before you take part, which is roughly 64 lengths of a 25m pool.”
Training does not have to be limited to the pool. www.taketothestreets.com offers free interactive advice and assistance with your training regime.
Its ‘Training Room’ feature can tailor a plan to meet your own needs and abilities. Users can keep their own personal training blog and take part in forum discussions on the best way to keep in shape.
Special training plans written by Olympic swimmer, Nick Gillingham, are online now to help people train for the event.
Using state-of-the-art technology, the online Training Room also allows for downloads via GPS straight to a mobile phone, which in turn can become the individual’s personal trainer, monitoring progress and fitness levels.
More tips and advice on how to train for the Great North Swim can be found at www.greatnorthswim.org The site also provides help for anyone wishing to hire a wet suit for the event.
