A TRIBUTE to Ulverston’s comic hero Stan Laurel has been unveiled – but it was not in the South Lakeland town where he was born.
A statue has been built in Bishop Auckland, where Laurel moved to as a young boy after being born in Ulverston, and it will go on display months before a statue of Laurel with his partner in comedy Oliver Hardy is revealed outside the Coronation Hall, Ulverston.
The statue has been ready for more than two years, but a suitable location was not found for it until last year when town councillors gave the green light for the £500,000 regeneration project of County Square, which is set to be completed next March.
