Cumbria seeks Woman of the Year

THE search for Cumbria Woman of the Year 2008 has begun.

Now in its 19th year, the committee are once again looking to honour outstanding, caring and achieving Cumbrian women.

The prestigious award will go to the woman who has made the most remarkable contribution to her community and the county.

This year, the award will run alongside a new Lifetime Achievement Award – developed by new sponsors Cumbria Life Magazine – which will be awarded to a woman who has made a remarkable contribution over many years.

The winners will be announced at a prestigious lunch at the Wordsworth Hotel in Grasmere on November 26 where they will be presented with Cumbria Crystal trophies. A raffle in aid of Riding for the Disabled and Carlisle Mencap will also take place.

Last year’s winner, 84-year-old, Chrissie Patterson, from Maryport, was chosen for her massive contribution to the community through fundraising events and her involvement with various committees and clubs.

The committee were particularly impressed with her ability to entertain through the numerous plays and pantomimes in which she has performed and by the “energy, expertise, good spirit and enthusiasm that she so freely gives during her tireless fundraising activities.”

Those wishing to nominate an individual for the award must make their submissions by September 5.
