TAXPAYERS in Cumbria could collectively fork out more than £30,000 extra a month to fund bus services from next week.
Cumbria County Council’s cabinet will consider increasing the amount it pays to bus operators in the county by 1.5 per cent from Monday (September 1). A 1.5 per cent increase would equate to an extra £30,350 paid by the authority each month.
The proposal has resulted from dialogue between council chiefs and the North Cumbria Coach Operators’ Association (NCCOA) who say their businesses have become unviable following soaring fuel prices.
