KENDAL has been named best large town in the annual Cumbria In Bloom competition.

The announcement was made at last night's eagerly-awaited awards ceremony at the Houghton Hall Garden Centre, Carlisle.

Hopeful representatives from towns, villages and hamlets from across the county gathered to see whether their blooms were judged pick of the bunch.

Kendal came out smelling of roses, winning the Marchon trophy and Silver Gilt award for the third year running.
