AS SPONSORSHIP money from Race for Life 2008 continues to roll in, the event’s popular patron has issued a “heartfelt” thank-you to all of the Cumbrian women who took part.

On June 1, local women of all ages, shapes and sizes headed to the Westmorland County Showground at Crooklands near Kendal for the Lakes Race for Life and so far more than £69,062 has been collected in sponsorship for Cancer Research UK.

“I would like to send my personal and heartfelt thanks to each and every one of the 1,350 Lakes women who responded to this year’s invitation to walk, jog or run 5k,” said TV presenter Gloria Hunniford, the patron of Race for Life. “I have been told that the atmosphere at the Westmorland County Showground on the day was once again truly inspiring.”

Ms Hunniford explained that although the majority of the sponsorship money had been collected in from the participants in the Lakes event, the charity was still short of its £78,000 target.

"I would just like to send a gentle reminder to those who have yet to do so to take that final step and send in their money," she added.
