Monday 13th October is European Road Safety Day and focus will be to address the subject of 'Road Safety in our Cities.'

It is a fact that about two thirds of the accidents and one third of all road fatalities occur in urban areas, often affecting the most vulnerable road users. Last year 222 people were killed on London's roads, 3,562 were seriously injured and 24,577 were slightly injured.

2,946 were killed on UK's roads last year. The European Union has set itself the target to halve the number of fatalities on our roads – from 54,000 to 27,000 – between 2001 and 2010.

In order to raise awareness, to give visibility to best local practices and to offer an opportunity to work together for safer roads in Europe the Commission has established a European Road Safety Day.

a²om (www.a2om.com) a young company based in Guildford is also seriously committed to bringing theses shocking figures down and is currently revolutionising young driver training, testing and road safety together with drivers in the fleet market (so important given the advent of the Corporate Manslaughter Act) with its unique online e-learning system and ground breaking software.

a²om has recently announced a world first - a BTEC in driving science, accredited by Edexcel.

Many UK County Councils actively committed to addressing road safety and bringing road fatality numbers down, are now in the process of training their local ADIs to deliver the BTEC to novice drivers countywide.
