PEOPLE who want to volunteer are being deterred by excessive criminal records checks, according to a local MP.

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron had tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons calling for the Government to provide greater monitoring of inappropriate CRB checks.

His move comes after it was revealed that last year 240,000 CRB applications were wrongly confused with other forms.

Mr Farron: “No one would disagree that CRB checks play a vital role in protecting the vulnerable; but this doesn’t mean that the system can’t be improved.”
