A SOUTH Lakeland pleasure cruiser has been recognised by a sustainable tourism nomination.
Ullswater Steamers, a heritage passenger boat operator, based in Glenridding, has been short-listed in the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards.
Justin Francis, director of the awards, said: “Ullswater Steamers has been a pioneer in sustainable tourism in the Lake District.
“They are doing a remarkable job in encouraging people to travel one way by steamer and then walk or cycle back, helping to disperse visitors within the local area and encourage healthier lifestyles.
“They place a high value on the protection and enhancement of the local environment, working with local communities and local businesses in the process.”
Jim Walker, chief executive of Ullswater Steamers, praised his staff for the nomination.
“We are delighted to have come so far in this international competition,” he said. “We are a small company, specialising in operating our passenger service from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding using our historic vessels.
“This success is due to the enthusiasm of our team of staff and their energy and drive ensuring we operate in as responsible way as possible.”
The winner of the international award will be announced in London on November 12.
