QUITTING smoking has led to an increase in life expectancy for people living in Cumbria.

Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that people are living longer across the county, but especially in South Lakeland and Eden where men and women can clock up an extra two years.

Cumbria’s director of public health John Ashton said people stopping smoking and managing their alcohol problems had all contributed and that the evidence was an added incentive for more people to curb their bad habits.

A typical Cumbria man will now live to 77.4 years and a women to 81.6 years.
