TONY Walker of Burneside CC (pictured right) received a League Achievement Award to mark more than 52 years of service to club and league at the Heysham Port Westmorland Cricket League's annual presentation night.
Tony played for 32 years between 1954 and 1986 and was Burneside’s second-team captain for 14 seasons, winning eight divisional champiosnhips and five cups.
He joined the club committee in 1957 at the age of 18 and took on the chairman’s job in 1987. As a commitee member he was instrumental in digging in the foundations of the new clubhouse in 1969 and also the building of the new pavilion.
The Fair Play Award went to Bolton-le-Sands and Colin Twiname (Shireshead) received the Junior Organiser Award. M. Wills (Milnthorpe) topped the Div 1 2008 batting averages with 58.89 from 15 innings and a top score of 112 not out. S. Airey (Burneside) led the Division 1 bowling averages with 48 wickets at 9.27.
P. Wilson (Westgate) took more runs and wickets than anyone else, hitting 587 and taking 61 victims - and finished second in both averages.
Best performances of 2008 included: Batting - highest individual score: Div 1: 124no S. Creed (Westgate) v Windermere; Div 2: 118 G. Swindlehurst (Shireshead) v Ibis; Div 3: 138no D. Swart (Holme) v Sedgwick A; Div 4: K. Williams (Cartmel) v Morecambe 4th.
Bowling - best return: Div 1: 8-16 D. Troughton (Kirkby Lonsdale) v Burneside; Div 2: 9-19 B. Smith (Bare) v Trimpell; Div 3: 7-4 D. Irvine (Ibis A) v Ingleton; Div 4: 7-7 G. Rand (Shireshead) v Ingleton.
Fielding - wicketkeeper: Div 1: 21 (10st & 11ct) D. Williams (Kirkby Lonsdale); Div 2: Shared between 20 (9st & 11ct) M. Ireland (Bolton-le-Sands) and 20 (6st & 14ct) C. Postlethwaite (Milnthorpe A); Div 3: 20 (3st & 17ct) R. Shepherd (Burneside A); Div 4: 25 (9st & 16ct) K. Williams (Cartmel Seconds).
