ROAD-RACE organiser Rod Berry was chasing down 1,000 Christmas puddings this week to give to finishers of this year’s Great Langdale Christmas Pudding 10k Races.

Rod, a great story-teller, approaches one of the local superstores to buy the puds from and it’s not as simple as it sounds.

Last year he followed the manager’s instruction to take just one of the puds off the shelf and ring it through the till – and they would do the rest.

Seeing Rod with his single pud, a couple in the queue full of the Christmas spirit took pity and ushered him through despite his protests - “No, no it doesn’t matter – it’s not what you think.”

The check-out assistant was duly told “it’s one pud but times a thousand” but the till choked at 99 and had to be reprogrammed over and over again. By the time Rod said he wanted to pay cash as well, he was not receiving the looks reserved for Father Christmas’s arrival!

Places are still available for this year’s two 10k races, which take place on Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, Demcember 14 (go to race website: greatlangdaleraces.org.uk .
