A SUPERMARKET chain looks set to occupy Kendal Rugby Club’s old ground when the team moves from Mintsfeet Industrial estate to a new site near Oxenholme.

Developers unveiled the first outline impression of what will become of Mint Bridge this week, which included plans for a 55,000sqft food store and separate DIY and garden centre units.

Two HGV turntables and 420 car park spaces will also be created at the site off Shap Road, which has been the home of Kendal RUFC since 1925.

Speculation has surrounded the future use of the ground since Kendal RUFC members voted to sell the site to Morbaine, in exchange for the Widnes-based developers buying a new 15-acre site on Strawberry Fields, off Oxenholme Road.

Architectural plans for both sites went on public display in the Kendal RUFC clubhouse this week, drawing a mixed response.
