People who consume alcohol in any of the 236 areas where public drinking is banned in South Lakeland could face a five-fold increase in fines, according to measures announced in the Queen’s Speech.
Those who flout South Lakeland District Council’s public drinking restrictions will see maximum penalties rise from £500 to £2,500 when the new Crime and Policing Bill comes into law in the next parliamentary session.
Following a legal order issued by the authority in January 2006, alcohol consumption is banned in 50 designated areas in Kendal, 65 in Bowness and Windermere, 62 in Ulverston, 26 in Ambleside, 19 in Grange-over-Sands and 14 in Milnthorpe.

SOUTH LAKELAND DISTRICT COUNCIL CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND POLICE ACT 2001 ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION IN DESIGNATED PUBLIC PLACES IN THE AREA OF SOUTH LAKELAND (No. 1) ORDER 20045 SOUTH LAKELAND DISTRICT COUNCIL (“the Council”) hereby makes the following Order, pursuant to Section 13(2) of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 20014 “the Act”): 1. The land described in the Schedule below and/or shown on the map attached to this Order, being land in the area of the Council which is land to which the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 applies, is hereby designated as a public place for the purposes of that Act.
2. This Order may be cited as the Alcohol Consumption in Designated Public Places in the area of South Lakeland (No. 1) Order 2005 and shall come into force on 22 January 2006.
