COUNCIL tax payers are to be given their say on spending priorities as part of Cumbria County Council’s radical new approach to setting its annual budget.
In a major departure from tradition, the authority is asking members of the public which services they would like to see grow and which they would prefer to be cut.
Normally, the Cabinet works closely with council officials to make budget decisions, which are subsequently voted on by the full council, but this year the Labour-controlled authority has left it to officials to draw up a series of options that the public will be allowed to challenge or approve before a vote takes place.
