A VISION to increase Kendal’s status as an international tourist destination and improve its prosperity into the 21st century has been unveiled by the town’s regeneration partnership. The Kendal Fit for the Future Tourism Plan looks to transform the Auld Grey Town into an “economically dynamic, culturally vibrant European Class contemporary town” while retaining its connections with the surrounding landscape and existing visitor attractions.
“Today’s visitors are very discerning,” said Mandy Dixon a member of KFB and chair of South Lakes Tourism Action Group. ”They are looking for something of international quality. They can find quaintness in towns like Kirkby Lonsdale and Hawkshead, but we are not in competition with these places as Kendal can provide a slice of modern city living within a lovely market town context.”
Mrs Dixon revealed the action plan at a meeting of Kendal Town Council (KTC), where she told councillors that while ambitious schemes, such as introducing a tram system or new stops on the Lakes Line, should were not beyond the realms of possibility, it was crucial for basic services and facilities to be in place first.
