Possibility of referendum over refused Sedbergh health centre plans

A REFERENDUM to decide the future of Sedbergh Health Centre could take place in the town within a month.

MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, Tim Farron organised a meeting between the towns doctors and representatives from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Sedbergh Parish Council to discuss the rejected plans for a new health centre.

The application - to transform Sedbergh’s old auction mart a into a state of the art medical centre and attached Spar convenience store - was refused by the YDNPA planning committee in November.

Now, the doctors have called for a parish poll while the parish council would like other site options to be explored.

Mr Farron is exploring the possibility of holding a parish poll but said he was determined that it should not cause division within the town.

“There are two main objectives – to make sure that we get a new health centre and to maintain a feeling of unity in the town," he said.

“If the doctors are going to resubmit their application they need to find out where the public stands."
