PLANS to pay tribute to one of Kendal’s most famous sons have been unveiled.

A bronze statue of legendary fell walker, writer and artist, Alfred Wainwright, will be designed by celebrated sculptor Graham Ibbeson to take pride and place within the Auld Grey Town.

Mr Ibbeson created the Eric Morecambe statue at Morecambe and the Laurel and Hardy statue soon to be placed in Ulverston.

It is understood that the statue, estimated to cost between £70,000 and £80,000, will be paid through public and corporate fundraising by Cornerstone Marketing Ltd.

Kendal Mayor Coun Clare Feeney-Johnson was delighted with the news and the benefits the sculpture could bring to the town: “It will help the overall enhancement of the town. I’ve done a bit of research into other towns that have similar statues and the economic benefits could be quite a benefit," she said.
