A SILVERDALE woman has been guiding migrating frogs across a busy village road by torchlight in an attempt to reduce “animal fatalities.”
Jules Bukowski said the amount of roadkill in the village has risen considerably this spring and is calling for signs along the country roads to warn drivers to be careful and “give nature a chance.”
Ms Bukowski keeps a wildlife diary and said she has recorded a significant increase in the number of animals killed on north Lancashire roads this year.
She believes speeding cars are the cause and is urging drivers to slow down when driving through Silverdale.
“I think it always has been a problem but especially in the spring when there are birds nesting and rabbits feeding,” she said.
“I have been lighting the way for frogs crossing the roads with my torch as they have been migrating and have been out at night the past few weeks.
“I would ask that people are more careful. If people go along the country lanes do take care and if you’re going through a nature area, just give nature a chance.”
In a statement, Lancashire County Council said the proposal for more signage will be discussed with the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty management team.
