PROP Billy Coxon finished off a First XV career with Kendal stretching over 17 seasons on a winning note in a 23-8 victory over Huddersfield at Mint Bridge on Saturday.

It was an unlikely mudbath in May after a torrential shower left standing water on the pitch, but Kendal worked their way into 13-5 half time lead thanks to a nimble-footed Ian Voortman try, converted by Roe Aloe who also slotted two penalties.

Huddersfield scored an unconverted try. The visitors dominated possession at the start of the second half but Kendal tackled superbly to keep them out and used well-won turnover ball to set winger Lewis Boyd on a scorching run-in, Aloe tacking on the extras.

When Kendal's Gareth Gore was sinbinned, Huddersfield successfully converted the penalty to cut the deficit to 20-8, but Aloe replied with a penalty for a yellow-card offence by one of the visitors.

That left Kendal 23-8 ahead and at the final whistle Coxon was given the match of the match award.
