STRONG winds and unseasonally chilly conditions were the real winners in the first open 50 miles time trial of the season on the A66 beside Bassenthwaite Lake last weekend.

VC Cumbria's Mark Amor managed a very creditabe 1hr 56min 29sec in the Lancaster CC promotion, but most riders struggled to disappointing returns and wrote them off as good 'training rides'. Kent Valley Road Club's Andrew Barlow did 2-03-13 and Tim Bennett 2-04-46.

The wind also do dominated Kent Valley's latest midweek 10 at Milnthorpe, where Lyn Hamel showed that her preparations for the national women's 10 miles championship are progressing well with a winning 23-57 ride, a minute and a half clear of Preston Wheelers guest Graham Harcourt, with Ben Lawson third on 25-30.

Other leading times were: Tony Dixon 26-41; Nigel Hooker 26-43 and Tom Gibson 27-31.
