Human rights row over town council prayer session

A COUNCILLOR has threatened to take legal action against Kendal Town Council’s traditional prayer reading before meetings.

Enda Farrell, who represents the Far Cross ward, argued that having a Christian prayer in the meeting room before proceedings could make some people feel excluded.

He called for prayers to be scrapped or to be held in a different room, stressing that it was a matter of equality.

“This council has to be seen to be acceptant of all people regardless of creed, colour or race,” he told councillors at a meeting on Monday night.

However Coun Graham Vincent argued that the council was a “Chrisitan council” and could see nothing wrong with the tradition.

he says it could make some people feel uncomfotable? like who? it seems it's only enda farrell that's complaining. It's tradition and this is a christian country, it's got nothing to do with human rights or equality, this is about a man who want's publicity, nothing more and nothing less.

This is an interesting argument put forward by Cllr Farrell. I am not sure I necessarily agree with his assertions that prayers are offensive, but this is not the first time prayers have caused controversy in South Lakeland: in 2006 an SLDC councillor spoke out against the practice in the district council.
