THE Lake District is to play host to an historic boat ‘launch’ next week.
The Government-funded heritage body National Historic Ships has chosen Windermere as the venue for the official unveiling of its new website, which will feature more than 1,500 vessels.
Of these, 215 are deemed so important they are collectively known as the National Historic Fleet.
Windermere was selected for the launch venue because of the strong links the lake has with National Historic Ships.
Eleven of the listed vessels in the national fleet are based at Windermere. Two others are based at Ullswater.
The National Historic Ships’ website is being launched at the Lake District Visitor Centre, Brockhole, on Wednesday.
Afterwards a forum for 40 owners of registered vessels will be held on the passenger boat Raven at Ullswater.
