A QUALITY field and a closely-fought finish helped set a stunning new record in Saturday’s Tebay Fell Race, which was a counter for the British Championships.
Simon Bailey (Mercia Fell Runners) won in 1hr 9min 44sec, lopping more than a minute off the 2007 previous-best mark set by Rob Jebb.
Bailey boldly took the race on from the second checkpoint and the first four to finish all dipped under the 1he 10min mark.
Ricky Lightfoot (Ellenborough AC, 1-9-56) was second, just two seconds ahead of Staveley-based Jebb (1-9-58, Bingley Harriers).
The rest of the top ten were: 4 Robert Hope (1-10-07, Pudsey & Bramley); 5 Ian Holmes (1-10-51, Bingley Harriers); 6 Danny Hope ( 1-11-52, Pudsey & Bramley); 7 John Heneghan (1-12-03, Pudsey & Bramley); 8 Jim Davies (1-12-22, Borrowdale FR) , 9 Tom Owens ( 1-12-55, Shettleston H), 10 Chris Steele (1-13-00, Borrowdale FR).
Keswick’s Phillippa Jackson was the first won to finish in 1-23-01, ahead of Emma Clayton (1-24-29, Scunthorpe) and Fiona Maxwell (1-24-45, Mourne Runners).
Leading Vets: V40s I. Holmes (Bingley Harriers); V50s S. Oldfield (Bradford Airedale); V60s B. Grant (Harrogate H); V70s F. Gibbs (Bingley H).
Women vets: V40s F. Maxwell (Mourne runners); V50s N. Davies (Borrowdale).
