Golf - 'Green Jacket' event goes to sudden-death finish

GOLFERS from all over the North West descended on Windermere Golf Club for The Neil Smith 36-Hole Scratch Competition.

Open to golfers open to golfers with a maximum handicap of nine, the event is a Cumbria Union of Golf Clubs’ ‘Green Jacket’ fixture.

Windermere’s Andrew Millray produced the morning’s best score with a gross 63 and several players tied for second place on 67.

One of the highlights was a hole In one on the 14th hole by 15-year-old David Ianson from Penwortham Golf Club.

In the afternoon, Sam Doidge and Grant Little from Kendal and Brampton clubs respectively, tied on 132 and had to go into a sudden death play-off to win the trophy and £400 first prize.

Little prevailed at the third extra hole in front of a large gallery on the 17th green.

Result: 1st Grant Little 132 - Brampton; 2nd Sam Doidge 132 - Kendal; 3rd Steve Jopson 133 - Carlisle;4th Gordon Greaves 135 - Windermere; 5th Craig Morrow 136 card play off - Seascale.

Best Gross AM - Andrew Millray 63 - Windermere.

Best Gross PM - Mark Jackson 66 - Windermere.

Best Net AM - David Ianson 61 - Penwortham.

Best Nett PM - Andrew Atkinson 63 - Windermere.

Best Nett Combined AM & PM - Dave Gosling 66 & 62 128 – Windermere
