A SHAP man is recovering in hospital after losing his foot in a workplace accident.
Matthew Allison, 24, is understood to have been working alone on a wood shaving machine at A W Jenkinson Forest Products at Clifton, near Penrith, when the incident happened.
Company secretary, Nicholas Fleming, said Mr Allison’s lower leg had been amputated around four inches below his knee as a result of the accident.
The circumstances surrounding what happened are not yet clear as the company has not yet spoken to Mr Allison, but Mr Fleming said an internal inquiry was being carried out.
“Obviously we are extremely concerned and members of staff are very shocked,” said Mr Fleming. “We need to look at the causes and go from there.”
He said he understood that Mr Allison was “recovering well” in Cumerland Infirmary, Carlisle.
The Health and Safety Executive is also carrying out an investigation, a spokesman confirmed.
