ALMOST half of the children questioned in a survey thought the Lake District was in the Midlands or Wales.
Children challenged to place well-known UK locations correctly were hundreds of miles out in their calculations, according to a poll by hotel chain Travelodge.
46 per cent of the 2,500 children aged 5 to 16 misplaced the Lake District, while 19 per cent thought Cornwall was in Scotland.
The survey also showed that Cornwall topped the list of children's UK holiday destinations this summer, followed by the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands, Devon and London.
