A £3 million pound project is set to make Coniston Water a higher quality environment for its animal and plant life.
Water company United Utilities plans to build a new treatment process at its Coniston Wastewater Treatment Works, which will help remove damaging phosphates that can cause algae to build up and reduce the amount of oxygen in the lake.
Standards laid down by the EU Habitats Directive mean that substances like phosphates have to be kept at lower levels.
The work is due to start in September, subject to planning permission, and should be complete by late spring next year.
