Football - Sky's the limit this time, says Town boss

THE NEW UniBond League season starts on Saturday and Kendal Town manager Lee Ashcroft has heaped praise on his squad by tipping them to go one better than last season’s play-off semi-final place finish.

Speaking ahead of Kendal’s season openerat home to Worksop Town , Ashcroft told The Gazette he had every confidence his side would be in the mix for promotion come May.

“We have a very good season last year but I’m sure we can get better and continue to improve as a side.

“Fitness-wise I couldn’t be happier with the pre-season we’ve had and I’ve been pleased with pretty much every game we’ve played so far.

“I want to improve every year and I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t think we could do that.”

Kendal Town’s consistently good form last term raised eyebrows throughout the Unibond Premier Division, while their fifth-place finish, secured in dramatic fashion on the last day of the season, upset a natural order of more financially dominant clubs in the division.

With teams now knowing what to expect when lining up against Kendal, Ashcroft is predicting a harder season ahead, but the former England B international also thinks his players will rise to the challenge.

“We probably did take people by surprise last season but not me.

“I watched this group week in week out in training and knew they were going to have a good season. It’ll be harder this time and people will be looking to get a result against us, but we’ve a young side who will continue to improve.”

After the visit of Worksop (3pm kick-off) Town travel to face Ashton on Monday evening (7.45pm).

Despite having secured wins against both sides last season, Ashcroft revealedTown would be keen to break an unwanted tradition.

He explained: “ We never start the season well – I don’t think we’ve had a good start to the season since I’ve been here! So we’ll be taking each game seriously and hopefully getting off to a good start.”
