FOOD journalist Richard Johnson is on a mission to find the best street food in Britain - and I wouldn't be surprised if some of it isn't to be found right here in the Lake District.

Kaushik Mistry's fantastic Indian food, chef Patrick Moore's traditional German-style barbecues, Furness Fish and Game's tasty paellas should surely be among the contenders.

But it's up to you to vote for them.

Britain has an estimated 10,000 mobile vendors working our streets and markets, and all are invited to enter the British Street Food Awards, which will be judged at a final 'cook-off' at next year’s Ludlow Food Festival.

The panel includes chefs Marco Pierre White and Antony Worrall Thompson, and the categories will include Best Pie, Best Dessert, Best Cold Drink, Best Hot Drink, Best Main Dish, Best Sandwich and Best Looking Mobiler. There will also be a People’s Choice award - and an overall winner.

Johnson, who has presented everything from Full On Food to Taste The Nation and Kill It, Cook It, Eat It, is on a one-man mission to change the perception of British Street Food.

“The new generation of mobilers have none of the grime, or the grease, which used to authenticate the whole British street food experience," he reckons. "It's not just about sausages from a tin any more – and there are some real street food heroes out there. So let’s celebrate them. We have revolutionised top end gastronomy in the UK, so now let’s look at the rest. It’s long overdue.”
