Hayton's View - Caldy's slick inter-play will test our mettle

4:36pm Wednesday 11th November 2009

To nearly quote Dinah Washington “What a difference a win makes” – a bus full of smiling faces – players and supporters.

However for the first half it was nip and tuck with both sides desperate to get on the scoresheet and not producing any fluidity. but in the second half rugby broke out. First Voort’s interception and 50-metre canter, then a sleight of hand by Parky to feed Gary Hodgson and finally Parky’s own finish to a move started in midfield. The worry of the last couple of weeks evaporated in the afternoon sunshine to distill a spirit of joy that only comes after that period of tension.

This week sees our toughest home game to date with the visit of second-placed Caldy. The Wirral based team are one point behind Loughborough Students and having a purple patch, losing only one of their last eight games. The run has included an impressive 50 point to 15 win at Preston and victories over top placed Loughborough, Leicester Lions and Harrogate. They recruited wisely during the summer to add to an already talented squad. At No. 8 they have Craig Smithson former Carlisle Youth and Macclesfield player who is a strong ball carrier and forager so Matt Charters and Lewis Boyd will enjoy the battle for bragging rights with their former colleague.

Paul Arnold, a former Sedgely Park colleague of Voorts, packs down in the second row. Former England and Sale prop Stuart Turner and Moseley fly-half Richard Vasey are now settled in and producing the goods for their new club.

Their game is a fairly simple one relying on quick ball and inter-play between forwards and backs to outflank their opponents. Ours will be a more direct route as always with quick counters when the opportunities arrive. Who’ll be smiling after?
