FORECASTERS predict more downpours over the coming days which could hamper the recovery effort from Cumbria's floods.

The Prime Minister ordered a safety review of bridges while visiting the worst-hit areas in Cockermouth yesterday.

Gordon Brown also pledged £1 million to help communities affected by the floods.

An inspection of 1,800 bridges is being undertaken by the Highways Agency and the Department for Transport.

A police officer died after the collapse of a bridge in Workington, while scores of Cockermouth residents had to be rescued from their homes.

More heavy showers are forecast for Cumbria this afternoon. The Met office is predicting around 40mm of rain to fall.
