West Lancs Football - Inconsistent Cors bow out of cup

LACKLUSTRE for long spells, Cors crashed out of the West Lancs President’s Cup in a 2-1 defeat by Croston sports.

Croston went ahead midway through the first half. A crossfield ball found the left back in space, and with the Cors’ defence racing over to cover, a square-pass picked out a midfielderto fire into the far corner.

From this point on, all of Cors’ frailties surfaced as they squandered possession and allowed the hosts too much time and space.

Croston struck the post from a direct free kick and Cors’ keeper Rick Carter had to make a sharp save from another unchallenged shot.

Despite Croston’s superiority, Cors went to the break on level terms thanks to a marvellous piece of opportunism from Ollie Wilson.

A Cors’ move broke down when an over-hit pass went out of play deep in the Croston half. From the throw-in back to the keeper, Wilson speedily closed in to capitalise on a poor first touch and steer the ball home.

Croston regained their dominance and their lead in the second half due ot Cors’ indiscipline.

As two Cors’ players argued, they were left short-handed in defence and r stroked the ball into the corner of the net with Cors’ defence in disarray.

Substitutes Dan Davidson and Andy Wilkins sparked Cors into life and combined for a great chance, but the shot was straight at the keeper.

Top scorer Wilson also headed over Aidan Caswell’s pin-point cross from close range with the goal at his mercy.

The same player did get the ball in the net before the final whistle, but Cors’ fate was sealed by the linesman’s flag.

The decision angered Cors players and management as Wilson clearly moved onto the ball past a defender and the flag was only raised when the ball was in the back of the net.

Cors had created enough chance to win, but their inconsistency overall needs to be addressed if they are to be competitive for the rest of the season.
