Cumbria flooding: Community spirit prevails across the county


COMMUNITY spirit has been in full force as people rallied around to help the victims of the floods.

Concerned residents have set up appeal funds and furniture appeals and offered up their homes and time to help those in flood-stricken parts of the county.

The Wainwright Society has set up an appeal and Eric Robson, chair of the society, said: “I'm absolutely certain about is that Wainwright would have been moved to tears by the plight of so many parts of his adopted county following the disastrous floods.”

“We're going to wait to see where the money donated can be best spent but it will definitely be used to help relieve some of the effects of the floods.”

Information is at www.wainwright.co.uk Shoppers at Booths in Kirkby Lonsdale are doing their bit by donating items from their shopping list to a trolley which will be sent to victims of the flood in Cockermouth. Vice chairman of the town council, Allan Muirhead, said: ‘Everyone just wants to help’.

Kendal Rotary Club is collecting around Kendal.

And £5,000 is hoped to be raised for those whose homes and businesses have been devastated by the floods through a performance by the Kewick’s Theatre by the Lake performance of their Christmas show Grimm Tales on December 4.

John Morphet, from Beetham, who owns South Lakeland Leisure Village has also offered shelter to flood victims at the Carnforth leisure park.

Other flood appeals are being held by the The Tourism and Conservation Partnership .

Impact Furniture Service South Lakes, based in Ulverston, is providing bedding, furniture, crockery and other essentials to households.

And people living out of the county have also been touched by the plight of those affected by the floods..

Ingrid Christy, who lives in Scotland, who has an empty home in Heysham, north Lancashire, is offering it up for flood victims.
