Work to start on Kirkby Lonsdale bridge

A £677,000 Highways Agency scheme to extend the life of the river bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale in Cumbria is to begin on Monday (December 14).

The work involves repairing and repainting Stanley Bridge, which carries the A65 over the River Lune in the town.

This section of the A65 was de-trunked by the Highways Agency and handed over to Cumbria County Council in April but the bridge repairs are part of a commitment to complete a series of repairs and improvements along the trans-Pennine route.

The bridge repairs scheme is due to be completed in April. The work will need narrowed lanes across the bridge but drivers will be largely unaffected apart from occasional use of off-peak lane closures between 8pm and 6am managed by traffic lights.

There will also be alternate closures of the two footpaths crossing the bridge but one of the footpaths will be kept open at all times.

Hiighways Agency project manager Phil Davies said, “This work represents a commitment we made to Cumbria County Council before handing the route over to it in April. The work will extend the life of the bridge.”
